Diarrhea may refer to as a loose bowel movement. The cause may be any of the following: poor hygiene in eating and drinking, contaminated foods and drink, infections in the ear, tonsils, urinary tract and intestines, eating unripe or incompatible foods, greasy foods, fermentation and gas in the intestines, malaria, certain commercial laxatives, intestinal parasites and certain chemical antibiotics. Severe cases result in dehydration and malnutrition.
Diarrhea Treatment. Giving the patient plenty of fruit juices and fresh water and bed rest are more effective than administering medicine. No medicine is usually required in treating diarrhea. Replacement of lost body fluid is very important in case of apparent dehydration. WE recommend any of the following formula’s.
1. one liter boiled water plus 2 tbsp honey plus 1tbsp salt.
2. coconut wayer 6-7 month old.
It must be remembered that diarrhea is a natural eliminative process which requires our assistance and not suppression. If possible, the patient should subsist on a meager diet for 1 or 2 days to give his stomach rest. Plenty of fruit juices and vegetables broth may be given. Use no oil to cook the vegetables.
The surroundings must be clean. No garbage must be allowed to accumulate nearby. Toilet hygiene must be observed.
The following herb preparation are effective in ordinary diarrhea: guava leaves tea, mug wort leave tea, and the decoction of the unripe banana fruit. The dose is normal for all cases. If there is discomfort or distress in the abdomen, take the tea of powdered charcoal(from coconut shells) to a glass of warm water. Add no sugar.
