Migraine is a nervous infection manifested by recurrent headaches. Attacks vary in intensity, duration and frequency. It tends to be hereditary, affecting also more women than men.
Causes of Migraine. Hereditary, although this is still subject to controversy. Impure bloodstream resulting to faulty digestion, improper diet are also primary causes. Chemicals like MSG – Chinese restraint syndrome, histamine and sodium nitrate which are present in cheese, chocolate and pork do trigger attacks. Menstrual disorders, dental and nasal problems, adenoids, overwork, emotional imbalances and certain contraceptive pills. Also ill-fitting shoes.
Symptoms of Migraine. Before an attack, the sufferer feels drowsy and depressed. There may be disturbance in vision, sensitive to light, vomiting, nausea, and difficult to talk. Then comes the boring throbbing headache which may start on one side of the head only, but finally affects both sides. Migrainous attacks may be disabling, but they are not necessarily dangerous.
Treatment of Migraine. Relieving the underlying cause, once it is discovered, will at one break the pattern of the recurrence headaches. The following foods must be eliminated from the diet: Cheese, mayonnaise, pork, fried foods, margarine, butter chocolates and animal milks. Sources of intense light must be removed. Foods rich in Vitamin B and D almost bring instant relief from menstrual tension which triggers migrainous attacks. These foods include sweet peppers, raw carrots, potatoes, Chinese cabbage, lettuce, onions, peas, corns, red ripe tomatoes, spinach, squash, beans and rice poolishings. Acid tasting fruits may have to be discarded temporarily. Cases of migraine have been relieved after the use of contraceptive pills were stopped; also after ill fitting shoes were junked.
For quick relief during an attack, apply a cold compress around the forehead and immerse the feet in hot water or herbal decoction for 20 or 30 mins.
